An enjoyable adventure never to be forgotten is a trip to the Tiger Kingdom in Chiang Mai. Get up close and personal with tigers of all sizes from the smallest around 3 months old up to the giant adults around 5 years old. An incredible half day outing with Bengal, Siberian & White Tigers. The ultimate experience for cat lovers.
Chiang Mai's Tiger Kingdom is located 45 minutes drive North from the centre of Chiang Mai to the Mae Rim area. Recommend taxi or red songthaew, bit too far for a tuk tuk.
On arrival you are greeted at reception and allocated a guide for your party. You choose the tiger package that you want to experience and the guide will take you around the complex. Every tiger you visit will have its own handler and the guide will give you instructions on how to approach and interact with the tigers. There are free lockers to store your gear as you cannot take anything into the tiger enclosures except your camera.
If you feel a few tummy flutters at first with the tigers, join the rest of the world, but don't worry, you should soon relax and enjoy the experience. The friendly guides are very professional, will show you around the whole complex, give you a run down on the rules to follow for safety and go with you into the tiger enclosures. You cannot handle new born cubs but can start with the smallest Bengal or Siberian cubs, around 3 months old, they are really cute and playful. From there move up to 2 year old medium cats all the way up to the 4 year old really big full grown adult tigers.
A professionally run outfit with a well equipped veterinary clinic. They have 2 full time vets on staff to look after the tigers. The handlers are gentle with the tigers and the tigers respond well to the kindness shown. Tigers are not drugged, just raised from birth to respond to commands from their handlers. Tiger pens are large enough for each animal with decent sized open area outside.
Tigers are most active in early morning and towards evening. That is the time to go to see them jumping and splashing around. In the afternoon they are mostly resting and at their less active making it easy to interact with them.
The venue owners have set up the Tiger Kingdom Learning Center and have built a really big retirement place up in the mountains for the tigers once they get past the 6 year mark. That facility is 10 times larger than the Tiger Kingdom complex. Up there the pens will be much larger to give the tigers much more room to roam around. It will be open for university veterinary and ecology science students to learn more about the tigers and their habitat.
Open every day the Tiger Kingdom is a fascinating experience. You have the option of using your own camera and/or hiring their photographer to take some amazing photos of you with the tigers.
There is a restaurant cafe for those who are hungry and a well stocked souvenir shop.
Prices range from 799THB to 5,000THB depending on which package you choose. For package details and more information on this wonderful venue you can visit the Tiger Kingdom website.
