With the increasing number of tourists to Northern Thailand a small but expanding group of dedicated cooks have started their own Cooking Schools to teach foreigners how to cook simple, nutritious and very tasty meals. Desserts are also featured for those with the sweeter palate.
The Thai people have long been known for their preparation of healthy meals that not only look and taste great but are very good for you as well, and they are nearly all gluten free.
It doesn't matter whether you are looking for a good meat or chicken Thai curry, a really tasty salad mix, a mango and coconut milk pudding or anything in between, Thai cooks can show you how to make a tasty dish quickly and simply.
Most Cooking Schools offer either 1/2 or full day courses with some even offering week long courses for those tourists with more time. Prices vary depending on which Cooking School you go to. Some Cooking Schools are as cheap and basic as sitting on the kitchen floor of some local Thai's house to the ultra high priced neon light academy. It is always best to weigh up who is going to instruct you, and what they are going to teach you to do.
One Cooking School whose name is gaining great respect is the Thai Farm Cooking School. Located several kilometres outside of Chiang Mai. It has friendly, well trained and talented chefs who enjoy nothing better than to laugh and share a joke with you and show you, hands on, how to easily cook a great meal. It doesn't matter if you are male or female and don't know a frypan from a saucepan, they will soon have you cooking up a feast.
Thai Farm Cooking School course includes pick up and return to your hotel, shopping in a local market on the way for some ingredients, tour of farm, learning about and collecting fresh ingredients, hands on learning how to cook 6 different Thai meals and then sampling your efforts.
You make three meals in the morning and eat them for lunch. You make a different three meals in the afternoon and can eat them there or take them back to your hotel for dinner. They give you a recipe book to take home, that includes photos and a commentary on all fruits and vegetables used in Thai Cooking and recipes of all the meals they teach. You can find an online version of their recipe book here. The course even includes email support to answer any questions you may have when you get home. One, Two and Three day courses available. (8.30am till 4.30pm = 1500THB per day). Cheap as chips, and the food tastes great.
Do it and show off your new Thai cooking skills to your friends when you get home from your visit to Chiang Mai.
